QR Codes & Plan Workflow

As I haven't seen this implemented, the following is just an idea... for now!

Instant Access: Embedding a QR Code in Your Plan’s Title Block

Probably the most common method of travel for a plan is by email, but there are times and places when that isn't appropriate or relevant. For example,  the plan is digital, and a user wants to transfer from our digital plan table to a mobile device, or it is printed. By placing a small QR code in the title block, we give that sheet a digital passport, enabling an easy jump to mobile devices or back onto the plan table screen the moment it is scanned.

How it works

  1. Embed once, publish everywhere
Generate a QR code that links to the authoritative PDF stored in your document management system (see CDE). Drop the code into the title block before you plot or export the file.
  2. Scan with any phone
Anyone using the Plan Review Table, one of our larger plan displays, or even out in the field can point a phone camera at the code. The PDF opens in the browser or your mobile application instantly, saving scrolling and file‑search time.
  3. Back‑and‑forth made easy
When the printed sheet returns from site a quick scan quickly pulls the digital version up on the Plan Table.

Why it matters

  • One source of truth: Everyone pulls the exact same revision, so version confusion disappears.
  • Faster navigation: Jump straight to the page instead of hunting through folders on a shared drive.
  • Paper‑to‑digital continuity: Field crews can access the same digital version they have just been using in printed form.
  • No extra hardware: Every modern phone reads QR codes natively, and the Plan Table add‑on scanner (this is available) plugs in via USB.

Implementation tips

  • Keep the link permanent. As we wrote about separately, a CDE is important.
  • Mind the code size. A 1" or 25mm square prints cleanly at 1:1 scale on D‑size sheets without stealing real estate.
  • Label it. Add a tiny caption such as “Scan for digital copy” so new users know what to do.
  • Secure access. If the file is confidential, route the QR link through your authentication gateway or a one‑time‑token service.

A small square with big impact

Adding a QR code to your title block would be a quick addition that pays off every time someone needs the latest drawing fast.

Update June 21, 2025: Procore supports adding QR codes, see https://support.procore.com/products/online/user-guide/project-level/drawings/tutorials/generate-and-print-qr-codes-for-drawings for details.
